The Kia Sportage or equivalent turned out to be an old, scratched, noisy VW Fox. The personnel was impossible to reason with. I returned the "car" 1 day in advance and have not received a refund yet.
No mention of insurance rate during online booking!Negativ: - I booked the car from Car Rentals. The price was good, around US$45 for two days, but made no mention about insurance. But when I picked up the car, I was charged insurance fee for almost double than what I paid for the car rental! How outrageous!
- Alamo does not have a kiosk at Merida Airport and I waited for more than half hour to wait for a pickup to their center which was 2km away from the airport terminal. Very inconvenient.
Alamo car rental......Positiv: Spent three wonderful days in Merida Yucatan, visited surrounding ruins. 4 th day went to Alamo and inles than 15 minutes we were on our way to visit other towns and Mayan ruins, all the way to Tulum.
The car was in great shape, clean and consumed little gas. THe roads were in excellent shape. It was difficult no to go above the speed limit, but thank God we did as there were several radar police on the roads...Negativ: TUlum and the coast hotels are wonderful, drove up to Playa del Carmen and like other BIG resorts it was crowded polluted and we left as soon as we could. Cancun, forget it, overdeveloped tourist trap... Totally destroyed nature....what a shame...
GOt back to Merida on time and again very efficient in our cur car return, about five minutes....
WOuld not think twice about using them again....
Negativ: I did not take the car, the prices mentiomed did not incluye the Insurance, and the Insurance was expensive, even more that the car itself.

Bait and Switch!! Beware!!!Negativ: Don't be fooled by crazy low prices. When you go to pick up the car they will not let you leave unless you buy their third party liability, even if your credit card covers collision internationally and your car insurance covers third party liability internationally. The insanely cheap prices are a bait and switch tactic and your actual rate could be 5 to 10 times as much as quoted.

Total Rip OffNegativ: When I arrived the agent would not rent the car without a $200 fee for insurance that was already covered by my credit card. I did not rent the car.

Car was reliable and served us well. Negativ: At the terminal doesn't mean at the terminal. It's a few blocks away and it was hard to find returning the car.
I asked for an automatic SUV when I reserved but there were not any so I ended up with the car they use to pick up people at the airport. It had manual windows and locks. Plus we struggled to fit all our baby stuff in it.
Charged us $30 for a few gallons of gas, which if you consider the exchange rate is really expensive.

Hertz's less expensive branchPositiv: Enthusiastic and attentive staff. Excellent price for the same car you'd get next door at Hertz. Check, as usual, for alternative insurance deals and you may save much more.Negativ: Damn near impossible to find. It's a little garage behind the Hertz lot. It's new and nobody knew where it was, especially from the address, since you can't see in unless you go through the Hertz yard.
Insurance confusion Negativ: I called Hertz three times trying to get cost of insurance for I arrive at the company to rent the car I was not able to get a quote for what the insurance would cost . At the Hertz pick up location I was quoted a price over US$300 for insurance for a two day rental.
I then asked about a lower-priced insurance off for and they found a second coat of over $200 for insurance for the two days .
Thankfully I have insurance from my credit card so I was able to decline this insurance . After I decline the insurance the person at the counter then wanted to sell me some documents in case I got in an accident for US$50 for a few pages printed material .
I felt like this $50 price for a few pages of printed material that the company should’ve provided for free was out and out theft .
At this point they inform you that my debit card would not be able to be used for the purchase of the rental . Thank goodness I had additional credit cards and was able to complete the transaction . I do not feel that Hertz should be associated with a company that does this kind of extreme pricing for insurance and does not inform the customer prior to arriving at the location of all of the additional cost .
No cars despite reservation 1 month in advanceNegativ: Showed up to the airport in Merida with a reservation made 1 month prior. Said there were no cars, that the situation was "complicated." The desk agent even tried to pretend that I had just made the reservation that day. Shady all around, and it screwed up our trip so we had to completely change our itinerary.
Overpriced, complicated process and poor vehicle Negativ: Check in took over an hour and was at a different location then we were told. We eventually got the vehicle and it was fine to drive the only issue was it was terrible on fuel and cost a lot to refill. Drop off was confusing and we were lucky we arrived early as our booking was until 6pm but on arrival they advised if we had of arrived after 5pm we would have had to take the vehicle to the airport drip off which obviously would have been very inconvient and was lucky we arrived back before 5pm.
Negativ: The actual price was almost twice the estimated price. After haggling with the guy at the counter I was able to get it down a bit, but still ended up paying more than expected.

Needed to change inclusionsPositiv: Agent pleasant,, car ready, short ride to depot. Agent was able to reissue the agreement at the same price with full insurance coverage. The original agreement only included mandatory liability insurance although we though we booked with collision damage waiver. Price came out the same.Negativ: This is an independent National Franchisee. We thought we were booking with National. Everything was fine however.
NonsensePositiv: Nothing.Negativ: Booked it in the states and got a quote. When we got to Merida the Payless staff tried to get more money for the car. He ended up trying to bargain with us and reduce the cost. This behavior was not okay, so we turned around and rented a car somewhere else. I will never use payless again.
no carPositiv: Nothing. Terrible. Negativ: I had reserved a car from 10am. We turned up at 11.20am to find that they had rented out all their cars and had none left. We then had a mad panic trying to find another car to rent from another rental at the busiest time of year - eventually found one and had to pay twice as much for it.
I actually blame Kayak as much because they should have made clear that 10am meant 'pick up the car at 10am on the dot otherwise they may rent out your car'.
Payless? Pay nothing because they don't have any cPositiv: Nothing.Negativ: Travelled for 3 hours by 2 taxis and a bus to get to the branch after making a reservation through Kayak. When we arrived they said they didn't have our reservation - and worse than that, they didn't have any cars available whatsoever. To be fair to the guy behind the desk, he did suggest we try next door, but it was a bit of a dodgy set up and the only car they had was an old banger. He also suggested Unirent, which we ended up walking to and using instead. I would definitely recommend using Unirent in Merida - very professional and helpful, and the car was great.
No car available Positiv: Even when I had a reservation, when I got there they had no car to give me. I ended up with no car for my vacation. Terrible experience!!!

Worst customer service experience EVER ! Negativ: We arrived to the rental office and the process to rent the vehicle took +2 hours... First they couldn't find our reservation, then they asked us to show the info for our reservation which we presented via the confirmation email from Kayak but they stated that they needed a printed confirmation (which really didn't make much sense)... We finally convinced them to accept our emailed reservation and of course the rate "could not be honored"... They stated that the rate listed on the confirmation was oniy for the reservation, which really didn't make sense for us... We ended up paying a rate that was 300% higher... In addition to this, we had called the rental office as soon as we made the booking and asked for a car seat for our 1 year old baby boy, for which they mentioned that they had 3 available and it should not be a problem... Of course when we asked for the car seat they didn't have any available and the person stated that they hadn't seen any car seat availability in several months... After all the different card swipes, rate charges, deposit, document signing, opening of vouchers, etc... We came to find out that they actually didn't even had the type of vehicle that we had booked... They could only rent us a "similar" type of vehicle that wasn't even in clean conditions and that when we checked the dashboard the fuel tank was COMPLETELY EMPTY ! Customer service rep responded with a "oh you should be ok to make it to the gas station" completely forgetting the fact that I'm traveling with my 7 months pregnant wife and a 1 year old baby... Anyway, we made it work as we were pretty much against the wall since we had already planned a few tours and visits to different parks and sights in the area... Then finally when the time came to return the vehicle we kept calling the office to ask if we could return this to an office that the company had that was literally two blocks away from our hotel and we couldn't get a hold of anybody... We went to the office near us in person and were told to go return the vehicle at the other location in order to close our outstanding account... When we went to the office to return the vehicle we were told that an additional full day was going to be charged as the vehicle needed to be returned before 10 am, but how are we supposed to know that ? The info is mentioned on the rental document but of course in super fine print... We honestly think that the customer service reps should provide the courtesy of mentioning this at time of pickup... What made it worse was that while we were going thru all this process we saw a pile of documents with rental info from other customers where they had made the return to be right before the closing schedule for the rental office... Again WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE EVER !! The problem now is that this situation makes us think that Kayak does not validate the quality of the service that is provided by its partners, and this makes us not want to ever use Kayak again !
