BHM airport location CLOSED midnight to 5am?!?Positiv: Friendly enough girl was at the counter at 5am. Negativ: How can the airport location be closed when flights are still landing?? Blows my mind that a company could operate this way. What are travelers supposed to do?? My flight landed at 1:15am. It wasn’t late. That was the scheduled arrival. I had to sleep in the airport until the counter opened up at 5am. There were 3 other people with the same or similar situations. Unacceptable.

She seemed like she didnt even want to cooperate, just because I came to pick up the car earlier than the time I indicated when I did the rental transaction online. The pick-up drop-off times simply had defaulted to 12:00 and 12:00. She also charged me for a 2-day rental with no explanation, but zt that point I just wanted to get on my way and handle that issue at MIA drop-off. And, yes, I got the over charge fixed by the MIA Alamo personnel, very simply and kindly.
Positiv: Drop off was good. Car was fine.Negativ: Charged us $45 to add an additional driver, but didn't advise us before hand (we would not have done it if we knew there was such a large charge). I only learned afterward.

Fortunately an Enterprise agent came and helped me. However it was a car from Canada and once i started driving I realized it was in kilometers per hour. I had to use my Ways app to check my speed. Also no cruise control as I was promised and it wasn't really the upgrade I was sold.

Easy experience, mostlyPositiv: Easy rental and return with no hassles, great driving car. Negativ: It was difficult to find the rental office in Birmingham because the reservation had the clean up lot's address, not the pick up address. That was confusing. The guard at the lot was super helpful though and said it happens all the time.
Positiv: The price and quick drop off!! The mini van was actually a great ride and comfortable.Negativ: The fact that searching for the car at pick up sucked!! It was in the space we were told it was and had to walk around trying the alarm to find the van...once we located it...I had to go back in and say that even though it was supposed to be "no smoking" the van smelled like cigarette smoke, so we wouldn't be charged with that..then to inquire as what I was supposed to do with the form for damage. I was just used to employees of the rental company walking with you to check out the vehicle. The van also has candy on the side of the passenger seat which meant it wasn't cleaned thoroughly but I wiped it down before my children rode in it.

Also, why would a van that costs far less than most mid-sized cars cost more than 2x as much to rent than that mid-sized car‽ ya, not doing THAT again.
Car reeked of Marijuana SmokePositiv: Price was good, and liked the ride of the Toyota CamryNegativ: The car smelled like pot when I picked it up. When I went into the front desk to notify the staff, they just blinked and said they'd note it on my damages form. They didn't offer to switch cars and they didn't even apologize to me. I made a comment again that I was disappointed with the smell of smoke when I dropped the car off, and the Manager who checked me in ignored my comment.
Weird weird budget sitePositiv: They gave us a free upgrade because the smart cars transmission was so bad it continually lulled and would kill us on the highway. Negativ: They asked questions I've never been asked when renting a car. They needed to know my destination and demanded my work telephone. We got budget specifically because I knew their other driver policy. Spouses are free. He went with me to get the car and we officially listed him as a second driver. When he returned the car full of gas in perfect shape the people at the desk said we were banned because he wasn't allowed to drive the car.
Truly avoid this budget location. It's not predictable and not well run. This is a locally run budget rental. Don't judge them all by this one.

Plenty of roomNegativ: After making the reservation on-line and receiving confirmation almost 2 weeks in advance, I attempted to call the pick-up office....no answer on 3 occasions, even the morning of the pick-up. When I arrived no full size SUV's available and very rude associate. I waited for an hour and a half. On return I asked the associate to call a cab and was told he could give me the #, but couldn't call. Will never use Budget again.
Positiv: Our Jeep Grand Cherokee had surprisingly great gas mileage and was a very comfortable ride even after 6 hours of driving.

AVOID THRIFTY: deceptive tacticsPositiv: The minimum expected from renting a car. Nothing outstanding, literally. Negativ: I rented an SUV which was not available when I arrived. I ended up with an under-class car and then they charged me 10% more with no explanation. This was prepay. Deceptive tactics hoping the customer will not complain.
Positiv: The car was nice. And the people we're trying their best. Negativ: It took an hour to pick up the car. Their computers weren't working properly and it was freezing.

Upgrade your kioskNegativ: My American Express would not swipe although I used it last week for a car rental at the airport. Not sure if it's bent or something. Anyways, they wouldn't enter my card info manually and their Credit card system was capable of using the chip in my Amex card. Was told there was nothing they could do. Terrible.
Didn't like the pricePositiv: I liked the truck I rented. It was clean and ran well. Negativ: When I went to drop the car off at the airport, they tried to make me pay about 40 dollars more but they really didn't explain why . Then they wanted me to pay 8 dollars more because they said I didn't bring it in on time, but I had. I had the agreement that they gave me when I picked up the car and I said I wasn't paying a dime more. Finally they agreed and I only paid what they said I would be paying. What the heck?
Positiv: I paid the quoted amount. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and fuel efficient. The ease of pick-up and drop-off was excellent. Highly recommended!!Negativ: The car only had 1/4 of a tank of gas at pick-up, but the rental ticket indicated it was full. Unfortunately, this was only noticed at drop-off. However, the clerk was sweet and comped our gas so we didn't have to pay the outrageous refuelling fee.
Damage to car when we picked upNegativ: No one from Dollar walked around the car with us to inspect it. There was damage to the front and back quarter panels which, therefore, was not noted on the rental documents. We noticed the damage when we got home to pack the car and called to have that added to the file, but was told that could not be done.
Pretty good for a compact!Positiv: Gas mileage was excellent. Plenty of room for my 6' husband.Negativ: I am pretty sure I clicked "full size" car when I ordered this car on line, but when we picked it up it showed I selected a "specialty car," which apparently means compact. Not sure how that happened, and we were given the option to upgrade (for a much higher cost of course). We tried out the compact, and it fit just fine, so we stayed with it. In the end it all worked out, but was a bit disappointed at first.

Unfortunately I had a huge complaint from my rental in Orlando - and due to protocol according to customer service, I had to deal with it at "drop off" - which is totally unfair. Why should the Birmingham clerk have to apologize for the service in Orlando???Negativ: There were 1, then 2, then 3, then 6 people waiting in line. And one woman clerk to handle all situations. There were "turtles" for people who were working within the cars - zero efficiency. The computers kept freezing. It looked like a horrible place to work. But our clerk was cheerful, apologetic, patient, and very accomodating.

Abused carPositiv: At pick-up car was clean on inside. Customer service on return was great in response to issue with cracked windshield.Negativ: At pick-up, exterior was abused & crack in windshield developed during my trip. I called when I noticed the crack & was told I could only exchange the car at a corporate location but there were no corporate locations within 2 hours of where we were staying. So I had no choice but to keep the car. The crack grew from 6" to 24" by the time I returned it 2 days later.
Negativ: Acted clueless about my complaints. Gave me corporate #. They gave me the run around. Never addressed my issues. Just blew me off.
Positiv: Service -- esp. the lady at the St. Pete airport. She was very social and professional -- wish I remembered her name.

Confirmed but no carNegativ: when I called to discuss pickup, I was told "oh, I was going to call you! We have your reservation, but we don't have any cars. This caused me considerable inconvenience.
Positiv: Harrison was so very helpful. He gave us a great deal on a lot bigger car then I had planned and it was wonderful to have all that room. Made for a awesome ride back to VA.
Also had a problem with being charged for Insurance which I already took out with Alamo for a different vehicle I was going to rent. But called customer service and they took care of it. ThanksNegativ: When we took the vehicle back to Norfolk Airport there was a few issues. I called they said on the recording they were open till 11:30 pm. Door said 10:00pm. Got there before 9:00pm not a soul in site.

Completely worthlessNegativ: They didn't have my car, tried to give me a huge truck I didn't want, and tried to force me to buy $200 of insurance I didn't need. I walked out and went to Budget down the street.

Terrible ExperienceNegativ: My fault that I accidentally booked a reservation that picked in downtown Birmingham and returned to the Birmingham International Airport. I meant to pick up at B-ham airport and return to the same location, but apparently I selected the incorrect address.
However, when I showed up to the airport, the Hertz representative was beyond rude and basically told me to F - off, that there was nothing she could do. The walk up rate she quoted me was $180 / day for a car. I immediately went to the Enterprise booth next door to Hertz and got a car for $34/day. By the way, I'm a Hertz Gold member and have used them frequently. Never again - terrible, terrible experience.

Description is accuratePositiv: This was the least expensive rental option on Kayak. You get what you pay for. Negativ: Car was dirty and smelled bad, however, there no mechanical problems. It got us where we needed to go, but my family will not allow me to rent from them again.

Flat tire. High rates to extend contract during stNegativ: Initially given a 40k mileage vehicle with a leaking tire, which I was allowed to replace after a few days. Nonetheless, we would have liked to receive a quality vehicle. Charged a higher rate to extend contract during a winter weather state of emergency. While local customer service okay, national hotline support awful.

Negativ: Very hard to get into the parking location for Payless. Then the door to get to the counter was locked & a hassle to get in. Check in clerk was pleasant & helpful. Check out clerk was rude.

Positiv: The vehicle was a 2018 Chevy Trek with satellite radioNegativ: When I made my reservation, I informed them I was coming on a late flight. When I arrived at the airport they were closed. I had to take a taxi to my final destination. I returned the next day via Uber. I explained this to the employee and she removed $50.00 from the bill. It was a nice offer but it did not reimburse me the total amount spent on transportation to and from the airport. The money saved booking thru Kayak was thus spent, negating savings. I do not wish to penalize the employee for trying to resolve this problem to the best of her ability.

Bait and switchPositiv: very littleNegativ: We arrived five minuted before the counter was supposed to open. Fifteen minutes later, there was still nobody there. A neighboring car rental counter directed me to their booth outside. Once there, I had to stand in line. When it was finally my turn, they did not have any small SUVs like I had requested. I specifically went with Thrifty because we wanted a small SUV and they had the best price, even though their other cars were not as competitively priced. They were unapologetic, told me it wasn't their fault, and told me I would take what they gave me. NEVER AGAIN!
Pickup disorganizedPositiv: Arrived in Birmingham for the pickup on a cold night. Took 30 minutes to get my car. Very disorganized. Then Toyota Rav 4 or equivalent rental was not possible, got a Kia Optima. A really bad experience except the young man in the rental booth was doing his absolute best with a chaotic situation, and he went the extra mile in trying to make the situation bearable for my wife and me..

The car also had a substantial ding on the hood at pickup which was apparently news to Thrifty. They wrote it up, but I'm left with the impression that they don't keep records of car condition and some other poor renter could be hit with a bill. I know I'll keep my photos and record.

Apparently, Thrifty had shipped a good portion of their cars to TX and FL to help out with hurricane victims. While I certainly applaud their effort, they had all my contact info and should have called / text / emailed that there would be a considerable wait for my car pick up. Better yet, they should have been able to forecast how many cars had been reserved and then ship the remainders to TX and FL. Maybe they should hire me as a consultant to help with their obvious data management needs.
