Stay away - poor vehicles Negativ: The vehicle was in poor condition. Carpet floor mats dirty and ripped. Service engine light on dash board lit up the entire time. Returned the car two days early and they will my provide any refund or compensation. Vehicle had less then a full tank of fuel upon pick up.

Rude Staff, Inneficient PoliciesPositiv: What did I like? Absolutely nothing about this company. Negativ: After a few phone calls from a very rude staff member, I finally arrived to their location at LaGuardia airport, which is actually off site, at a Holiday Inn. The woman at the counter then informs me of a $2,500 security deposit which wasn’t listed anywhere in any of the confirmation or FAQ that I rea, just because I am a New York City resident. Obviously I know there are deposits on any rental cars, and just the week prior I had rented a car at Enterprise with a $250 deposit. They also wanted to force their EZ Pass rental on me, at an extra $6 a day. I planned on renting it anyway but this was the first time I was not given a choice on it. Plus, there was a mileage limit per day. Also a first for me. So, since I didn’t have an extra $2,500 available for a deposit, I wasn’t able to rent the car, and since it was a holiday weekend, no other rental agencies had any availability. So my weekend trip to Washington DC was canceled thanks to Ace car rental and their superb lack of customer service. My own fault, I suppose, for not looking up other customer reviews and seeing a 1.8 rating on google.
Free upgrade Positiv: I got a free upgrade from my Nissan versa to Kia optima. The personnel was kind and quick. All arguing issues were solved rapidly. Negativ: Firstly they charged 100$ more, than they had to. But when I paid their attention on it, they resolved this issue quickly.
Positiv: The attendant was very understanding and flexible.
Unfortunately, on the day of our return, we got a parking ticket, and our rental was booted due to outstanding fines on the car. I was initially upset, but after going to the office and explaining the situation, there appeared to be a mixup with the NYC parking authority, as we could not find outstanding tickets on the license plate number.
They took 1 day off of our bill for our troubles, and I was able to leave the key with them, and told them where I left the car. They turned what was initially a very stressful situation into a positive experience.

Then being charged a mandatory security deposit. A car with a faulty tire pressure sign flashing, explained away as being ok. When alternative car requested I was offered a compact from mid size original. When car returned 4 days earlier due to change of plans I was told that there was no refund policy for unused days. Sadly, one feels the whole rental experiece from start to finish as a big ripoff. If there was an option for rating this service it would be minus 5 stars.

Only Picks up from Marine Air Terminal at LGAPositiv: Slightly tatty but inexpensive vehicle.Negativ: The airport shuttle only picks up at the puddle-jumper terminal at LGA. When at the Central Terminal a shuttle failed to arrive after 40 minutes, I called the 800#, was told that the shuttle circulated every 15 - 20 minutes, and there was no mention of the single, obscure terminal pickup (which, however inconvenient, is possible to access via the airport terminal buses).
Front tires were unbalanced and nearly bald. Rears looked relatively young.

They robbed me with EZ PassNegativ: I gave Advantage a try on a recent trip to NJ. Had to use the EZ Pass for tolls on bridges, tunnels and turnpikes. When I returned the car, I was informed that the fee for EZ Pass was $25 per use unless I paid a $24 fee per day up front. They said that they told me this when I was picking up the car but I am sure that they did not. A $70 rental is going to end up costing almost $200 more in EZ Pass fees! This company is not honest and I won't be using them again.

The car's HI windshield wiper stopped in the middle of a downpour. I was panicked and had to slow the car and hit the hazards. That's scary on a tri-state highway. My fast-thinking passenger reached and turned the wipers down to LO and we made it thru the city. Don't know if it was the car or the maintenance, but I'm never driving that make or model again.

Positiv: I rent cars quite frequently. The difference in the treatment that I received at Alamo was amazing to me. From the gentleman who assisted me with the rental, to the man who brought the car around for me, to the man who manned the gate when I left. I was very happy, felt like my business mattered and even loved the car that they gave to me. I way very happy.

An hour+ wait for a car and Positiv: 1. When we arrived at the TF Green Avis location (Rhode Island), they swapped out the car quickly, easily and apologized for the inconvenience.
2. The E 43rd Street location in NYC were helpful when we dropped the car off. They said if we ever can't get through on the line when dropping off, that they're open 24/7 and will take the car back.
3. The clerk at the Long Island City location did take off $150 for the inconvenience of having to wait for over an hour. Negativ: 1. Over an hour + to pick up at the Long Island City, Queens location.
2. Avis provided a car that did not have a working charging or infotainment system - only realized it after I was in the Midtown Tunnel in NYC.
3. We called to change the drop off location, the call center repeatedly noted that they couldn't change anything in the system but would not provide an explanation or alternative. They were not helpful.
4. When calling the Avis Long Island City location, no one picked up -- prior to pick up and when we were trying to drop off the car. When I was in line while picking up the car, the clerk noted that the phone line wasn't working. One week later, it still wasn't working.

Worst experience ever Positiv: Nothing Negativ: Made a reservation for a specific type of car (midsize sub) and when we got to the rental at midnight after a long day of traveling they didn’t have any of those cars. Instead of offering a free upgrade, they were trying to charge us for a different drop of point for a diffferent car. The total difference was more than double the original price. We cancelled the reservation and rented another car with advantage.

Guess what we had to due in order to prevent upcharges or penalties?
Positiv: The vehicle was clean and reliable, with very good milage. The basic fee on kayak was reasonable, but after adding insurance and other unnecessary items, it totaled nearly 2 times the original amount. However, the shuttles were frequent and took us to and from the airport in an efficient way.Negativ: The lady which attended us was very forthcoming, and tried her best to up-sell every product available to us, something which I did not appreciate.
Poor customer servicePositiv: Car that we ended up with was clean and comfortable Negativ: Horrible customer service at the rental counter. They had given away the car we had reserve, and tried to force a few in us for the upgraded car that was available. They gave us NO information about drop-off, so when we brought the car back at 10:15pm, the counter was closed but the attached garage was open, but they refused to accept our car. So we were stuck w this huge SUV in Manhatten trying to find a parking spot on a Saturday night. Nightmare. Then had to go drop off in the morning and they were still just as rude as ever. Will never rent from them again, and this makes me wary about using kayak again for car rentals. Not enough information on the rental company (i.e., hours of service, drop-off info, specific policies and fees, etc).

Was charged double the price of our rental to vacuum dog hair out of the car...no dog was ever in the car. The small amount that could have possibly been tracked in on clothing (visited a house with a dog) is not worth $50.
Negativ: The shuttle which picked us up from the airport re-entered terminals area to pickup passengers for a parking company (not the rental company), got stuck in traffic, and then arrived with only 5 minutes before the parking company closed, making the rental process a stressful rush.
Off the beaten path...Positiv: The car itself was fine, until we realized the windshield wipers didn't work very well. Negativ: We rented through kayak, and found that when we went to the airport to pick up the car at Economy, the car was at a third party company, names rental car drivo or something of the sort, who couldn't answer any of my questions about the terms and conditions of economy because they had their own set of terms and conditions which weren't in the breakdown when I rented it online originally. Very confusing, being told you're getting a car from a third party even though it says economy on my receipt. They charge you for having an easy pass, no way around it, and they don't even pay for the tolls. (The easy pass didn't work in the end, but I still got charged) You have to call for a shuttle to pick you up at the airport and they sent two because the first one just didn't do it....so an hour after waiting I finally got picked up. Over all. It was just a weird and frustrating experience with them...you're better off with a regular old budget or enterprise car.
Rude and liars!!Negativ: Followed the instructions given on the phone on the email, i arrived at the Federal Circle station in JFK and call them to pick me up, they informed me that in 15 minutes a shuttle will be there.
After 15 minutes i called again, and they said the driver informed them that he picked up all the passengers at federal circle, well, i was there all the time looking for the black Mercedes with the economy logo on it, but no one came... simple liars!
then, they said OK in 7 minutes the car will come, so 10 minutes later i called again and asked if anyone coming to pick me up ?

Instead they want a deposit as well. Fine. but then They tell me they can't split the payment between my credit card and my debit. And because I had to put it all on my debit I have to get the 19 dollar a day insurance which I wouldn't have to if using a credit card. So this doubles the cost of the rental. When I return the car there is construction on the road so I am running late. they tell me they can't give me any lee way past the grace period so I rush as fast as I can through terrible New York traffic and don't stop to fill up the gas. I'm late anyway of course. turns out they do not charge me for an extra day but I do get charged and extra 72.00 dollars for gas. If I knew they weren't gonna charge me for an extra day I would have stopped to fill up the tank. Just some better and mor understanding customer service would have made a world of difference in this whole experience.
Positiv: Nice good working cars available. Negativ: Staff working at the 124-10 South Conduit Avenue location for Economy Rent a Car were not the most helpful right away. I know the staff has a duty to abide by company policy regarding renting out the car, but it is not an excuse for not being competent and willing to look for a way to help the customer during difficult situations. If anything, that's why they have their job, to interact with "human being" face-to-face and work "with" the customer, otherwise, a computer and a sophisticated program could take care of most of their responsibilities.
Anyway, one of their staffers eventually helped me out, which I am very thankful for, but they could've helped me out sooner without putting me through an acute state of alarm if all of them were more knowledgeable of what to do in case a customer faced a difficult circumstance.

The place was operating from a trailer and there were no signs. It was difficult to find their office for the drop-off.
Negativ: Arrived at the rental location where they didnt have my vehicle ready or they didnt have enough cars. The guy who helped my IAN MARTIN made it seem like he was doing me a favor by given me the next class of vehicle. ( Which is what you're suppose to do in that situation. Being that I used to be a car rental manager). Out to the vehicle walk around, the car had dings all over it, and smelled badly. I noticed that the gas level was between half and the quarter level. I went back inside to ask for a car that had a full tank of gas, because it was easier to take it out full and bring it back full. IAN MARTIN began arguing with me why he's not going to do that. His final response was " You seem like a cool guy, I gave you a free upgrade you have two choices you can either take the car as is or we can void the ticket". He knew that the car was prepaid and i would not have to deal with them to get my refund back if at all. Being that it was late and I had been traveling all day I was tired of arguing with someone who doesnt know what it means to take care of customers. To make matters worse the next day I noticed products I left on the driver side passenger floor had rat holes all over it. I called a couple numbers of what seemed to be a corporate number till i finally spoke with someone who gave me a "supposed corporate" number. The number was not a working number. Since I was in NY for work I didnt have time to continue trying to reach someone. The next morning I called the branch to let them know of my experience so far and that they have a rat issue the lady on the phone who sounded like she was reading off scripts puts me on hold several times that equated to over 30min then tells me its not their fault that its my fault. I was taken aback by her response. When I brought the car back, the guy checking me back in asked if everything went well I told him it was the worst experience i've had with a car rental company and I would be be renting from them in the future. He asks why? I explained what happened. His repeonse was that they have 4 cats in their lot and rat traps that its hard that a rat got into the car. Now his response tells me they've had rat problems in the past I happened to be a victim of it but they didnt want to claim responsibility. This was infact the worst experience I've ever had at a rental company. If you value a clean car, and good customer service don't rent from here. It seems like poor customer service is the norm and tradition at this company. Ian Martin should not be helping people put him in the back office or car washing duties or provide customer service training to him and all employees.

That's what you get for so cheap + no money payed for booking.

Great rental experience!Positiv: Renting a car from Hertz at PIE Airport (Clearwater) couldn’t be easier. Fast, smooth, and very helpful associate. Highly recommended.Negativ: No suggestions for improvement. After we left Clearwater, we went to Providence, RI (Post Road location) and used Hertz again - that office and their associates could learn a lot from the folks at PIE Hertz!
Ran out of cars, gave first car to someone who arrived laterPositiv: They upgraded my car after I complainedNegativ: They didn't have any cars available when I arrived. They gave the first car to someone who arrived later and then tried to remedy the situation by offering to buy me breakfast.
Great dealPositiv: Nice to have the best price come from a rental company directly at the airport instead of one of the others who require a shuttle to an off-site location. Negativ: The lady at the counter for our early morning drop off was grumpy and barely said a word. She took our keys and sent us on our way efficiently enough though.

Did not get the car!Positiv: NothingNegativ: I paid for my care rental online on a visa debit card which they took from my bank account I went to the place to pick up my car the lady said “ooo we only accept manor credit cards, & not debit!” they took the money already from my bank that means I paid! & It is redicilous to treat PAYING CUSTOMERS, this way. So I asked for. Refun & left the place!
Long story shortPositiv: I ended up with a decent Mid sized SUVNegativ: When I showed up to pick up my car the office in Whitestone Queens, NY was locked and no one was there. I called a number on the door and someone said they would be back in 5 minutes.
25 minutes later a very nice representative arrived and explained that even though I made my reservation 6 months before the pick up date, they didn't have my car. She offered to send me to another Hertz location with a Nisan Sentra. I drove the car 45 minutes to another Hertz location to pick up the car I reserved. Once I got there they tried to give me the smallest "SUV" I've ever seen. I would be luck to fit a medium sized suitcase in the back - I think it was a Chevy Trax, this thing was not a mid-sized SUV. I repeatedly asked for a larger car and they said they had none. They also said that would not get one by tomorrow and that no other location in NYC would have a larger car. Only after refusing to take the car for more than 30 minutes and standing outside in the freezing weather did the manager finally offer me a Toyota RAV4 that had been just hanging out in the garage. Finally I was given a Mid-Sized SUV!
Because of the elaborate process of getting my car I was instructed by all representatives to call before returning my car to figure out where I should bring it. I had decided to return it to the Park Slope Brooklyn NY location because that's where I picked up the Toyota RAV4 ultimately and it was closer to where I lived.
When I called the Whitestone Queens location, I was told that there would be a $15 inner city return fee. When I then called to confirm things with the Park Slope Brooklyn location they said that there would be a $100 inner city return fee. They suggested I contact the 800 number who finally let me return it a day later for around $60 - I'm not sure if the inner city fee was included. The car was fine but the runaround was too much.
Bad wheel bearings - low tires alertPositiv: The car was available on time.Negativ: The car got terrible mileage partially due to grinding wheel bearings, and needed air in tires- no wiper fluid. I performed the easier tasks of course. Due to my business constraints, I had to time to exchange the vehicle.

Came thru in the clutch.Positiv: During a very busy graduation weekend I was able to find a vehicle to accommodate 7 adults with luggage AND allowed me to pickup and drop off at different locations. Well done.Negativ: Nothing!

Winzig Gedränge von einem AutoPositiv: Bus Service auf Zeit zu mieten Büro außerhalb des Geländes.Negativ: hört auf eine Juke-Box? I. gefragt hatten weder Auto und dies für Hotelecke was ich bekam. Konnte kaum etwas fit in dieser Sache. Andere Mittel groß sind nicht annähernd so klein.

Poor Customer Service Negativ: - I reserved a 4WD vehicle and was told the SUV I was given had it but when i got stuck in the snow I realized it wasn't 4WD
- it took 25 minutes to get the car once the paperwork was done
- the car was filthy when I got it - not washed
- when I dropped it off, the woman at the counter clearly had no interest in verifying if the SUV was indeed 4WD. Since I paid more for that feature I wanted to verify and ideally get some credit back if it was not 4WD
- overall the staff was quite rude and was not happy with this company atvsll
Positiv: The price can't be beat. Negativ: My first car was not well maintained. The low pressure alert came on during the second day. Then the engine light and low fluid level alert came on.
They exchanged the car after some issues (It was the holiday week)with no extra charges.
Positiv: The staff on-site was helpful and professional.Negativ: It was impossible to get ahold of anyone by phone.
Unpleasant staff, first car in terrible conditionPositiv: Once I requested a new car (see cons), my experience got slightly better. The car was very no-frills without even a remote to unlock it. It worked and had pretty good gas mileage.Negativ: Staff was unpleasant and barely around. It took me an extremely long time to get the keys and then I was told "it's outside in the parking lot" with no other direction. It was less than 20 degrees when I was there and way too cold to pull luggage through a parking lot searching for my car! Upon opening the car door I was met with A VERY strong smell of weed. I tried to drive the car, but the smoke was so strong it gave me a headache within the first ten minutes. It is beyond me how anyone thought that this car would be acceptable to rent out when it smelled so strongly of marijuana. When I went in to trade my car for a new one, it took another half hour - 45 minutes to finally get on the road. I am livid about my experience here and would not recommend.
Positiv: Price we were quoted was the price we paid, and they gave us exactly the car we reserved--down to the color! Drop off and pick up were painless. Employees were very knowledgeable about rates and insurance etc.

Defective car Positiv: The first car I was given gave me two flat tires in the middle of the expressway. I had to pull over, change the tire, I noticed the other tire had a bubble, I call Payless where they told me to drive it back to the pickup spot. On my way to the pick up spot is when the other tire started to go flat. This was before I had to attend a wedding! Thankfully I was given another car but I was never compensated for my lost time or in any way. Negativ: I've also somehow been charged with toll fees even though I used my own ezpass.
Kia Forte - Compact CarPositiv: It was fine. Clean, easy to drive and manage. A good point A to B car and what you'd expect from a rental place. The renewal process for an additional week was easy and well worth the price for two weeks overall.Negativ: The car had a hint of cigarette smoke lingering in it. Each time I opened the door, I'd get a slight whiff before it dispersed.
No cars available.Positiv: The minivan was clean.Negativ: I arrived to pick up my car, only to find a long line stretching out the door to the tiny office full of angry, irritated individuals. Apparently the office was entirely out of cars to rent out. I had to wait an hour to receive a car, which ended up being a mini van rather than the small sedan that I had reserved because that was literally the only vehicle they had left. It was definitely much more intimidating to drive through NYC and ended up using a lot more gas than I had anticipated. Would not use this car rental location again.

Positiv: Clean carNegativ: Be aware that Allianz car insurance is not accepted here. I don't own a car and was in a rush, so I had no remedy than to accept their overpriced insurance. Also, taxes and fees were about $40 more than the estimate I got here and Hotwire.
Will take you over 1.5 hours to get a carNegativ: Had to take a shuttle bus to terminal A. Had to wait to take another shuttle to Thirfty (35-40 minutes all in). A warehouse with a vinyl sign on it is the location. Wait in a small waiting area for at least another 45 minutes. Scheduled my car pick up for 10:30am, did not pick up until noon. They lure you in with a cheap rate online then they spend a long time up selling everyone which takes forever to be seen. My $30 rental ended up at $63 after they finished w me. Wish I paid more at Hertz for the piece of mind and way less hassle

The 38k car smelled bad.Positiv: The returning was very smooth,the staff was very helpful. Negativ: Picking up was slow and even I purchased extra coverage through hotwire. She still pushad me on purchasing from them telling me the one I bought was not legit.

Positiv: Very easy to reserve, pick up and drop off. Negativ: Very poor explanation at the pick up counter about their plate pass program. I think it's ridiculous that I would have had to pay >$80 for their pass when the tolls I was crossing through were $1-$3.
