When we finished the registration process the guy at the counter calmly slid me a bill for $685. Our original vehicle didn't seem to be available so the guy was essentially insisting that we take an upgrade whose price he described as "not much" but that ended up being $25/day or so, and then there was the insurance package that was also described as "not expensive" but that added hundreds of dollars to the bill. We never did get the reservation we made online and ended up in the upgraded car for $418 instead of $685, but that is still more than we intended to pay. Apparently it was not possible to actually get what we reserved online...

Positiv: The people in the area where you drop off the car were nice. The return people were quick and efficient. They gave us poor directions to find our car in the parking lot. It was as far away as you could park it in the back corner. It took us 5 minutes and a couple of the cleaning people to help find it.Negativ: We had to wait in line for 50 minutes at check in. They had 2 agents who took close to 10 minutes per customer trying to upsell all their services. Every other rental car company had no lines with in 20 minutes. I would not use them again. I would rather pay a little more and not have to wait for 50 minutes and be able to find my rental car.
Charged for "free" UpgradePositiv: During check-in, the service rep told me he was giving me an upgrade from the economy car I originally booked. I never asked for one but thought that was really nice. I ended up in a mini SUV. The vehicle was in good condition and I was impressed with car rental experience thus far.Negativ: After reviewing my rental agreement, I noticed that I was actually being charged $22/day for this "upgrade" (which I thought was free). When I returned the vehicle, I told the service rep that I never agreed to this price increase. He rolled his eyes and said there was nothing he could do about it. I asked to speak to a manager. After waiting for several minutes, she did come to the desk and reversed the charges. I thought that was fair. However, there was another curveball I didn't expect. When I booked through Kayak, I prepaid for the daily rental fee and all applicable taxes/fees. I agreed to the collision damage waiver upon checkin, realizing I would have to pay an additional daily fee for this (which I was okay with). What they don't tell you, is that all of the taxes/fees are percentage-based and are applied to the total value of your rental (including the base fare plus any add-ons). So, not only did I have to settle up for the collision damage waiver fee, but there were an additional six taxes and fees that I then had to pay on top of my original booking. Overall, I was really disappointed about this. Advantage should be more transparent and upfront about their fee structure. It left a bad taste in my mouth and I would not return to them or recommend them to a friend anytime soon.
Positiv: Great car!Negativ: 30 min. wait to check in with rep, who wanted to charge me $129 extra for (added on a day for 3 extra hours rental) when I was already quoted an hourly rate (total $36) w/ my on-line check-in). Manager involved & 45 minutes later, we were ready to go, but I was told my car was not yet ready. "It could be 2 min. or 2 hrs.", when I asked. When asked if he could find out, he said "no", but eventually did. Ineffective manager summoned again. Total fiasco! These guys seemed poorly trained & seemed shady, trying to get me to take an upgrade (for a fee, of course) & no idea how to treat customers with respect.
Deceitful Positiv: NothingNegativ: The add for phx airport said the car is in the terminal. For that reason I booked with advantage and pre paid instead of going with another car company and not prepaying. Ended up not being in the terminal and instead of not fulfilling my reservation which I would have normally done I was stuck having to fulfill it and waiting on a huge line. The car ended up also smelling like smoke and I couldn't get proper assistance switching cars. My last time booking anything through kayak if I am not reimbursed

Undisclosed InformationPositiv: Car itself was really nice, picking it up and dropping it off was really easy. Negativ: When i put a hold on the car online it said it wold be a certain price. In the end the online insurance ended up being next to useless so we had to get a new policy at the rental. The website warned about there being extra fees due to being below 25 years old but never said what they were going to be. When it was all said and done the total cost ended up being almost $300 more then the estimated price.
Negativ: The worker when I picked up the car was pushy. He wanted me to upgrade to a bigger car, buy additional protection, etc.

Negativ: Pickup salesperson was extremely pushy, dishonest, and not forthcoming with the purchase I was making. It left me with a bad impression of the Alamo company, which is disappointing because I've previously never had issues with Alamo. However, I was so upset following this interaction that I probably won't be using Alamo for quite some time, until something convinces me otherwise. Generally speaking, rental cars and prices are equivocal across the board; it was Alamo's friendly employees and interpersonal skills that made me choose them time and time again. However, this time, the salesman was overbearing, pushy, dishonest, and to be frank, I felt taken advantage of.
Excellent experience!Positiv: Properly staffed check in counter that kept the line moving and self serve machines. Very friendly staff who gave helpful advice like don’t pay for the extra driver because spouses are covered for free. We arrived early and even got to pick up the car ahead of time our scheduled time. And we had booked an economy car but when we got to the garage, they gave us a Kia soul, which I personally really like to drive. Everyone was all smiles, which is so rare at car rentals, and it really started our trip off right!
Positiv: Phoenix airport 11/22, At drop-off I was loaded down with four bags including a large bulky bike bag. While unloading the car an Alamo employee named Lyle offered to drive me to the Southwest terminal. This would allow me to skip the rental bus and avoid the elevator and street crossings as well as the long line.
We loaded the bags back in the car and dropped me right off at the skycap, Lyle saved me at least 30 minutes of grief and made my day. Excellent service. Thanks

Interesting experiencePositiv: The price was outstanding, 1/3 of the price it would have cost if we had rented at the airport. Negativ: I didn't realize that I was renting from an off-airport location, I only found out when I went to the counter to pick up the car. They wanted to charge me 3 times the amount I had reserved the car for and said it was due to 48% airport taxes. We hired a Lyft to take us on the 20 minute drive to pick up the car. It was an Avis counter at a self-storage facility. They were way under-staffed and it took a while to get the car. The car was extremely dusty to the point where I could barely see out of the windshield but they told me since it is a desert (Phoenix), cars get dirty quickly. They had me do the check on my own but re-did the paperwork when I took it in. The woman was efficient and polite but since she was by herself, didn't have the time to go out and check the car with me. It was nice to be "upgraded" to a hybrid as the gas mileage was excellent. When I went to return the car, there was no parking and the woman who checked me in, wrote her info on my paperwork so I had to take a picture of it in order to have a copy in the event the company tries to say I damaged the car 6 months later. I returned the car in the exact condition I rented it so hopefully that will not happen. I have heard many horror stories and this place seemed a little sketchy so I wanted to make sure I have proof of the condition the vehicle was in when I rented it.

Tricked into rental far from airport -- $40 cab riPositiv: Nice new MalibuNegativ: The Malibu first had a probelm with the key fob, so one day I could not lock, unlock or start the vehicle. The Avis emergency road service line was able to talk me through how to cope with this.
Later, we had a slow leak in a tire, so we had to drive to an airport 30 minutes away to swap it for another car. Getting in touch with a specific Avis dealer to see if they could handle this was a nightmare. We never did manage to get through the phone system to a human.
I had requested a rental at the PHX airport, and what we found on arrival was that the rental agency was a $40 cab ride away! I felt we had been suckered.
The wrong location ! Negativ: The one labelled as Sky Harbor Airport Avis was not the airport rental location, it was downtown. This was not mentioned when booking. Got on the car rental shuttle (as you would expect to), and taken to the airport Avis, only to be told there was not reservation for me there. I had to either get a taxi to the downtown Avis, or get a new booking, which is what I did, but it was $100 more expensive, due mainly to higher tax rates per the Avis agent. Very misleading by KAYAK !!!

No shuttle bus" When I arrived to return the car, I did everything as instructed and exactly ZERO employees knew what to do. We sat in the Arizona heat for 25 minutes waiting for them to figure out how to get us to the airport. Other than that, everything else went as expected. Turned out okNegativ: After flying across the country (Syracuse to Phoenix) we arrived to pick up our car and was told they didn't have any and that it could take a few hours to get. The first gentleman was very nice and apologized. He even suggested we check with their competitors. We did, with no luck, so went back to Dollar and the second man was rude and showed no interest in helping us. With no other options, we went down to check in and wait. Luckily, it wasn't long before a car became available. My issue was that I made this reservation months in advance. Dollar should be ready to accommodate those reservations even if that means going to another one of their locations and picking cars up.

Why not just charge more and stop this ridiculous practice? . Most people have insurance or credit cards that cover in case of accident.
huge price increase from quotePositiv: The Nissan car we ended up with was clean, comfortable, and a smooth ride.Negativ: The quote I received from Kayak was $179 for a 2 week rental. The nominal rate was $29.98 per week. When I checked in, with tax & fees the quote was approximately $250. When I said I wanted my spouse as an extra driver, they added $13.50 per day plus tax & fees. I was expecting to get a rental for $179. It ended up costing me $467.
Furthermore, when I arrived I was given 3 cars to choose from. I picked out a Ford Focus. I loaded all my luggage & began to drive toward the exit. The car hesitated & stalled when I accelerated, so I returned & selected a different car. I placed the keys of the Focus on the dashboard, where they were when I found them. I popped the trunk, stepped out of the car, and closed the drivers door. To my dismay, the doors were locked. I had not pushed the door lock button. I returned to the booth & explained the problem & waited a half hour while a staff person finally arrived and extracted the keys so I could get my backpack out of the back seat. Not a pleasant start to my trip.

When I made it through the 45 minute line with 2 suitcases and wearing a back brace and walking shoe I was told my reservations was not completed when I dropped my car off at San Antonio location! I was stuck in airport 5 hours until I could secure ride to sun city, then had to come in next day to get a car! That was a nightmare! The car and staff were great, other than the Phoenix counter staff upon my arrival, all was pleasant and I believe I will be a return customer.

They get it that business people with a prearranged and tight schedule have planned their timing through the car rental procedure and only want to move onto the street.

Negativ: A smaller operation made finding the car and the return situation a little difficult. There is no E-Z signage until you get into the parking garage so I wasn't even sure if I was in the right place at first.

When returning to the PHX airport, non of the main signage had EZ rental car listed. We ended up in the wrong place. Better signage is needed. I guess they are affiliated with Advatage, but none of the rental papers said that.

When I got to the desk, I was told I was getting a "free updgrade" to a minivan. When I said I absolutely did not want a minivan, they said that was all they had left, and I could either take the minivan or pay to upgrade to an SUV, which I also did not want. Won't use this company again.
A Crew Couldn't Care LessPositiv: Price, but it wasn't that much of a break to consider them againNegativ: Terrible service at the Phoenix airport. A 3 stage process to get the car, including a surly agent at the key pick-up area. No one came to meet us to do the final check of the vehicle, so we had to drive around and go back to the check-in counter and drop it off ourselves.
The car was pretty banged up and the upholstery was stained and filthy.
Drop-off was, granted, early at 4:00 am but there was one person checking the cars in who also had to take our keys back, so they were delayed while we were in a hurry to get to our flight. Most places have unified this process with some kind of hand-held device.
Vehicles are poorly maintained Positiv: Staff was pleasant, though fees were not communicated clearly. They tried to up-sell me twice, when I refused both times they gave me the upgraded vehicle anyway, which makes me think they were short on my selected model and were trying to charge me for their error.Negativ: The vehicle I received had a broken antenna, was well passed due on its oil change, washer fluid was empty, and had a low/leaky tire that we had to fill twice over the course of our week. At pickup, it appeared that there was at least two or three other customers that were also having issues with their vehicles and were waiting on replacement vehicles. I will never rent from them again.
Was not able to rentNegativ: The customer service at e-z was great but there was some sort of trigger that went off when I checked in and I was not able to rent through e-z. They said the system indicated I'm an "undesirable renter". No explanation why, and when I called e-z customer care they did not see the same trigger. Took up a lot of time.

Negativ: return was very slow. so many people had to wait cause they only had one person checking returns. They also did bait and switch on me. I got a max total price from you !91 but they charged me higher. He was so busy he did not have time to talk to me but told me I can to take it up with the 800# on the receipt. ComplicatedPositiv: The car Negativ: I upgraded my reservation to a better car and extended for two days. After 5 days I got an email asking how was my rental car and realized the woman that helped me didn´t extended the days so I had to pay a penalty.
Plus I wanted to extend for another week and they told me is against AZ law and I needed to drive all the way to the airport, the whole process took about 4 hours. A really bad experience

The people who actually gave us our car at the pick up were super nice too.Negativ: The car smelled of smoke. We found the butt of a stogie in the back of the seat. Not the rental company’s fault. However... after waiting in a terrible long and slow line, the woman who checked us in was rude. Not just rude, but condescending and way more interested in her co-workers. She walked away from us and came back 10 minutes later and announced I needed to sign the contract, I told her I did and she told me I didn’t. After fiddling around on the computer, she looks up and says I guess you did, aren’t you clever. I could go on. Anyway. Everyone else there was nice.
Buyer beware of Fox Rental CarsPositiv: Nothing Negativ: After arriving at the Fox counter and finding out that there was a $150 deposit to use a credit card or $400 to use a deb debit card and extra fees to pick up the car early or drop it off early and seeing the absolute madhouse at the arrival counter and the car pickup area we canceled our reservation and went to Avis. Avis had none of these issues and was nearly the same initial cost. Wow, never will we even try to use Fox again. By the way if you use your card at Fox don’t expect to see your deposit back on a credit card for 3 to 5 days and up to 3 weeks on a debit card according to the Fox counter agent.
Okay butPositiv: Van worked out well, not what I booked. Vehicle did the job though and we got around on our trip without any issues. Front end was decent enough to deal with just too much sales. Decent service, just slow. Return was hassle free. Negativ: Long process to pick up a prebooked vehicle. Tried to "upgrade" me multiple times to vehicles that were smaller than my request for more than my booked in rate. Ended up taking a van that I really didn't want at slightly more money just to end the process (which is my fault). Had to again wait another 30+ minutes to actually get my rental.
Renter Beware!! Positiv: The car rode well but was dirty inside and out. Negativ: They run a fast talking up sell routine. Per Kayak car was to be 9.98 per day. They of course suggest upgrading to a fancier car. We agreed and the price went from $89 for the 4 days to $150. (Yes it was our choice to upgrade but we now regret it). The biggest scam is that they push you to “just have them fill up the car with gas upon your return” because they charge less than the corner gas station. What they don’t tell you is that if you agree to that option they charge you for a FULL tank of gas regardless of how much gas is left in the tank. We returned the car with 3/4 of a tank full of gas. Being charged for a full tank of gas and all the taxes brought our $150 rental up to $218. Renter beware. In the future we’d fill the gas tank ourselves and use another company. Wasn’t worth the LONG wait in line to get the car.

TerriblePositiv: NothingNegativ: I follow the rules and guidelines laid out by Kayak and they refuse to rent to me even though it was paid for months in advance and I was listed as the driver. The refund for it has not been issued yet. I was left stranded in the middle if nowhere and treated like a criminal. They also said the one option they would give me would cost 3 times the original amount and that is something I could not afford.

They have a key drop box so you can drop off car even if they're closed.Negativ: There was a 30 minute line up to pick up car but that's not their fault. The location I picked is not near the airport, also not their fault.

They had people working on the cars that didn’t even work for hurtz because I asked the employees they told me they were people off the street that they pay under the table to clean cars for them. Then they charged me a $200 deposit. The car was on empty when I picked it up so I returned it the same way on empty empty. They charged me $66.00 for gas that I’m trying to get back as of right now.

Dependable Vehicles Positiv: I liked the car. It was a newer Nissan Sedan. It was as clean and the perfect size car for my needs.Negativ: The cost crippled me. I was visiting my daughter who is receiving treatment in Prescott Valley. I flew in from DFW to Vegas for a 5 hour layover, then to Phoenix. After an 11 hour day at three different airports, I still had to drive from Phoenix to Prescott Valley. All I had was my debit card,m, so I was charged more. The cost of the car was booked at $160 for the 4 day rental. I ended up paying $286, wiping out more than 2/3 of my travel budget. I could not afford the car, but had no other options. Though grateful to have transportation at all, it would have been nice to have the difference of $130+ dollars to spend on food and things to do with my daughter.

Finally, double check your contract BEFORE leaving the counter! I refused all coverage, and was hit for a "Lost Damage Waiver", @ the cost of $29.99 a day. I was asked to initial my refusal of coverage, and didn't read what I initialed (my fault), and bamm, $29.99 per day.

Meh....Positiv: The best parts about my rental experience was the two gentlemen who provided me with the rental and the great gas mileage-because I did some real driving. The car itself was a mess-not clean upon pick-up and had many signs of wear and tear and a possible accident. Also, if anything happens where you need to bring the car back any later than the exact pick up time, they will nickle and dime you. I had a small emergency where we needed to keep the car a couple of hours longer and they quoted me over $30 extra and could not tell me how the extra total was configured. The customer service agents I spoke with were either rude, dismissive, and/or not helpful at all. This experience makes me second guess renting from them again.
